Former Bethesda and Obsidian devs form new studio, announce Wyrdsong as first game
This collection of AAA titles will transport you to a mystical setting.
Something Wicked Games, a new company created by former Bethesda Game Studios and Obsidian Entertainment veterans, has released the first title it will release, Wysong.
The game was revealed at Gamescom’s Opening Night Live, the RPG is a dark historical setting in which every choice has consequences for the world and other worlds still waiting to be explored.
Created using Unreal Engine 5, the game is set in a fictionalized representation of Portugal during the middle age. In this game, players are forced to consider their own reality as well as the choices they make.
The studio based in Washington DC was established by Bethesda veteran Jeff Gardiner and co-founded by the former Obsidian director of design Charles Staples. Both worked for 15 years at both firms and Gardiner as the project director and lead producer for several games in both the Fallout as well as The Elder Scrolls franchises. Staples was the design director for The Outer Worlds and was the head of the design team for the level for Fallout: New Vegas.
“Our goal with Something Wicked Games is to utilize our independence and creative autonomy to create the next evolution of open-world RPGs,” stated Gardiner. “Our first project, Wyrdsong, has been my dream game for some time now, and I’m thrilled to finally share it today.”
Following a round of seed capital that included $13.2 million put into the project in the company by NetEase, Something Wicked Games is currently hiring for all posts. The company currently has twelve developers. The company is hoping to have a complete team of 65 to 70 as the development process continues to speed up.
A release date, as well as platforms, will be announced later in due course since Wyrdsong is in the pre-alpha stage.
